Check access before changing the PC
As of September 13, 2026, WARDOGS is available to buy in Steam Early Access, with a September 10 release date. Use the main WARDOGS Library entry for Early Access. For a separate test, check the official WARDOGS announcements for its own access window.
In Steam Library, check whether you are opening WARDOGS or WARDOGS Playtest. A retained Playtest install or a Request Access button does not establish current permission. If the main game has no usable Install/Play button, confirm that you are signed into the account with access to it before troubleshooting. If a separate test has ended, stop here: verifying files will not reopen it. Continue only for an available build your account can currently use.
Match what happens after Play
Open Windows Task Manager before pressing Play and watch for a recognizable game or launcher process, a window, and any error text. An exact error message takes priority over the generic symptom below.
No process, window, or error: continue to the safe checks.
A process or window appears and exits, with no exact error: the launch started. Use the startup crash guide instead of repeating no-launch checks.
WD-L020 appears: keep the full error code and check the official Windows 11 guidance before generic retries.
An anti-cheat error appears: record the full message and the launcher name, then use Elytra and EAC errors.
You reach the game, then get kicked: launching succeeded. For “no valid heartbeat within window,” use the heartbeat note below.
Steam's “app already running” message can also follow a hung process or silent crash. Restart Windows, or end only a process you can clearly identify as the game; do not end unknown system processes. This distinction comes from Steam's app-already-running guidance.
WD-L020 and Windows 11 KB5124010
If the launcher shows WD-L020, record the full code. Check your Windows 11 version in Settings → System → About and your installed updates in Settings → Windows Update → Update history. Microsoft identifies KB5124010 as a September 22, 2026 non-security preview update for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2. If the error, Windows version, or installed KB does not match, do not assume this update caused your failure; send the exact details to support.
As checked September 29, Team17’s pinned developer support post says it is investigating a potential compatibility issue. There is no confirmed fix in that post. Keeping Windows updated and waiting for a game-side resolution is an option. Team17 also describes rolling back KB5124010 as an optional step that may help if you prefer not to wait; it is not required or guaranteed, and removing updates can affect security, stability and compatibility. Read the developer post and your device’s update policy before deciding. Do not disable Windows protection or remove an update based only on a player reply.
Four safe checks for a valid, installed client
These are general Steam troubleshooting checks, not a guaranteed WARDOGS-specific repair. Follow them in order, skipping anything you have already completed for this build. Keep antivirus, firewall and anti-cheat protection enabled.
After each change, try Play once:
- The menu opens: stop troubleshooting.
- A new error appears or the game starts then exits: return to the matching symptom above.
- Nothing changes: move to the next check. After all four, send a support report; do not repeat the entire cycle.
1. Finish updates and restart
Let Steam finish any pending update for the correct client. Restart Windows, reopen Steam, and try the same client once. If it still does nothing, continue. Steam recommends starting its no-launch checks after a fresh restart.
2. Compare the PC and check official updates
The WARDOGS Steam listing gives these minimum requirements: 64-bit Windows 10, Intel Core i5-8600 or AMD Ryzen 5 3500, 16 GB RAM, Nvidia GTX 1660 or Radeon RX 590, 50 GB available storage, and broadband internet. Windows 11 is recommended. Meeting these requirements does not identify or rule out a particular launch fault.
Check Windows updates through Microsoft and GPU drivers through your hardware vendor. Do not remove a Windows update or install a preview kernel based only on another player’s reported fix. For an exact WD-L020 error with matching Windows and KB details, use the developer’s conditional guidance above. If the PC is below the listed range, include that difference in your support report rather than assuming another launch tweak will solve it.
3. Verify files through Steam
In Steam Library, right-click the correct installed client, choose Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files, and wait for completion. Verify one game at a time; avoid running a virus scan or disk defragmentation at the same time. Then try Play once. This is Steam's file-verification procedure; it cannot restore access to a closed test.
4. Close non-essential background tools
Exit non-essential overlays, recording programs, hardware tuning tools or peripheral helpers, then try once. Keep security software, anti-cheat, required drivers and services running. If nothing changes, reopen the tools you closed and send the report below. If the game opens, note which tools were closed so support can investigate the difference.
Elytra and EAC errors
“The anti-cheat service refused the game executable”
The Steam store lists Elytra as of September 13, 2026. Check the name and exact message shown by your launcher. An EAC repair procedure should not be applied to an Elytra message.
For a currently accessible client, finish pending Steam updates, restart, and verify files using the checks above. In the Steam discussion of this Elytra error, some players said verification helped, while others still could not launch after verification and a restart. If you have already tried those checks, skip them and submit the unchanged error to game support. There is no single WARDOGS-specific fix confirmed for every launch failure.
If your error actually names Easy Anti-Cheat, look for the same error title or number in the official EAC support directory. If there is no exact match, use game support instead. Neither a launcher error nor a failed retry proves that Windows, your hardware, or another installed program is the cause.
“No valid heartbeat within window” after entering the game
A September player report shows this message on a KICKED screen after the player had been driving teammates. If that matches your experience, the game already launched; repeated no-launch checks are the wrong path. Record when the kick occurs, check for a current service notice in the official announcements above, and send the exact message to game support. This report does not establish one cause or fix for the error. If your message appears before the game opens, include that different timing in the report.
When to stop and get help
Stop when a full pass through the applicable checks makes no difference. Also stop if the PC blue-screens, restarts unexpectedly, enters recovery, or freezes persistently; seek device or qualified PC support for those system-level symptoms.
Do not disable Windows Security, Smart App Control, Memory Integrity, Secure Boot, TPM, antivirus, firewall or anti-cheat to try a forum fix. Do not delete game/anti-cheat/system folders, edit the registry or .ini files, or download third-party executables and repair tools. Do not remove Windows updates based on unverified player fixes; the WD-L020 developer post above presents a conditional, optional choice after checking the exact error and installed KB.
Open the game's Steam Library → Support entry for the current game-support route. You can also use Team17 Support for a technical report, or check developer-marked posts in the WARDOGS Support forum. Ordinary player replies are not official repair instructions.
What to put in the support report
- Exact Library client name, current access state, and whether Install or Play is visible.
- Visible build/event name, date, time and time zone.
- What happens after Play: process, launcher, window, crash handler, or a kick after entering the game.
- Full error text/number, launcher name and a screenshot.
- Windows version, CPU, RAM, GPU, driver version and free storage; for WD-L020, include whether KB5124010 appears in Update history.
- Checks already completed and what changed after each one, including “no change.”
Remove passwords, verification codes, Steam sessions, email addresses, IP addresses and unnecessary personal paths before sharing the report.
